William Means Guide to Ansonborough

◂ Back to Posts

The charming Ansonborough neighborhood is situated in the heart of downtown Charleston’s historic district. These regal homes are located just steps from the bustling Charleston City Market and King Street. Despite its central location, residents enjoy a great deal of quiet and privacy living in this special downtown neighborhood.

Historic Significance. Considered one of Charleston’s first “suburbs,” Ansonborough experienced commercial and residential development as early as the mid 1700’s. A fire in 1838 dramatically changed the landscape of the neighborhood and many homes were reconstructed using fire-retardant materials.

Charming Homes. Colorful window boxes, manicured gardens, and flickering gas lanterns lend Ansonborough a truly magical quality. In the 1950’s, the Historic Charleston Foundation implemented the Ansonborough Rehabilitation Project to ensure the preservation of these special homes for decades to come.

Central Location. Bound by East Bay Street, Meeting Street, Chapel Street and N. Market Street, Ansonborough holds a special place in the center of downtown Charleston. Residents have easy access to the Lower Peninsula’s main roadways as well as shopping and dining at the Charleston City Market and the nearby shopping district on King Street.

Green Space. Neighborhood residents are also in close proximity to several downtown parks. Enjoy the harbor breezes at Gadsdenboro Park off of Concord Street and take advantage of the farmer’s market at Marion Square just across Meeting Street.

Culinary Scene. FIG, 167 Raw, Cru Cafe, 5Church, and Peninsula Grill are just a few of the many popular dining options in Ansonborough. Whether you are looking for seafood or a classic burger, there is likely an option just steps away when you’re in the neighborhood.

Historic charm and quiet streets paired with the dynamic hustle and bustle of Charleston’s historic district make Ansonborough a truly one-of-a-kind neighborhood. Explore homes for sale in Ansonborough.
