Why We Love Calling Charleston Home

◂ Back to Posts

Our beloved city of Charleston is filled with history, charm and culture. Known for its cobblestone streets, antebellum mansions and breathtaking coastal surroundings, Charleston offers the perfect blend of Southern hospitality and coastal living. There are certain aspects of life in this city that you just won’t find anywhere else. We’ve rounded up what truly makes Charleston so special and why we love to call this city our home.

Rich history. As one of the oldest cities in the United States, Charleston is drenched in history. Along the streets of downtown, you’ll discover historic architecture like colorful row houses along Rainbow Row and Charleston Singles with double piazzas. Take a peek beyond the wrought-iron gates to take in the beauty of centuries-old gardens. The Holy City takes great pride in preserving its historic buildings, ensuring that each corner allows you to step back in time. Explore historic landmarks like Fort Sumter or take a day trip to one of the area’s southern plantations to immerse yourself in history.

Southern hospitality. Charlestonians take Southern hospitality seriously. It’s not uncommon for strangers to greet each other with a smile and engage in warm conversations. Living in Charleston means experiencing genuine kindness and a strong sense of community wherever you go. When visiting our city, expect to be treated like family.

Gullah culture. The Gullah culture is deeply rooted in Charleston’s history from the soulful flavors of Lowcountry cuisine to handcrafted sweetgrass baskets being meticulously sewn on the corners of downtown streets. Locals and visitors can immerse themselves in this vibrant culture, from attending local festivals to indulging in traditional dishes like shrimp and grits, okra and gumbo.

Lowcountry cuisine. Speaking of gumbo, Charleston has become an unmatched culinary scene over the years. You’ll find a variety of restaurants that use local ingredients to create decadent dishes with freshly caught seafood and grits. There’s also endless options to enjoy world-renowned barbecue with famous banana pudding. Even as a local, it’s almost impossible to dine at every restaurant in the area.

Beaches and waterfront living. Living in Charleston means having easy access to some of the most beautiful beaches and waterfront locations on the East Coast. From beaching on Sullivan’s Island to enjoying a boat day to Capers Island, there’s a spot for everyone to enjoy the sun and aquatic lifestyle. The city’s waterfront attractions, such as Waterfront Park, Pitt Street Bridge and White Point Garden, offer panoramic views of the Charleston Harbor, or the sunset, while enjoying a leisurely stroll.

Festivals and social events. Charleston’s calendar is packed with festivals and celebrations throughout the year. From the iconic Spoleto Festival USA, the Charleston Wine + Food Festival or Second Sunday on King Street, there’s always a family-friendly event to look forward to.

Charleston offers a unique experience of history, culture and natural beauty that you won’t find anywhere else. If you’re looking to move to Charleston or just explore the city, one of our expert agents would be delighted to show you why you’ll love calling Charleston home, too.
