Relocating to Charleston

The most recent statistic provided by the Charleston Regional Development Alliance says that 34 people are relocating to Charleston every day, and it’s not hard to understand why. The migration to Charleston is one that happens for many reasons. There aren’t many cities in the United States where you can find amazing history, live by the ocean, enjoy an incredible culinary scene, experience beautiful weather and be around friendly people. Among the unique qualities of Charleston you will find that there are many words and phrases used that are specific to our area. Many people enjoy hearing a “ya’ll”, “fixin”, and “I reckon.” I recently learned of a new term that seems to be a favorite description of people who have relocated to Charleston: “from off.”

I admit that I am “from off” having moved to South Carolina more than 18 years ago. I feel that my status has evolved to “transplant” given my longevity. Though I am not always sure that native Charlestonians use the term “from off” in an endearing way, I am told it is simply a way to explain non-natives’ actions. One of the most endearing things I have found about Charleston is that the people who call it home are extremely welcoming. I find the ones who were born and raised here are inviting and hospitable, and the people “from off” also feel a sense of pride for the city even though they are not originally from Charleston.

Like Charleston, William Means Real Estate is a melting pot of agents. We have a number of agents who were born and raised in here. We also have agents who have migrated to Charleston from many different places. All have a deep love for our city and a passion for real estate. William Means agents are always happy to help those “from off” discover the things about Charleston that make it such an amazing place to call home.
