West Ashley, formally known as West of the Ashley, is a vibrant district of Charleston located on ‘the other side’ of the Ashley River. Bordered by scenic marshes and waterfront vistas of the Ashley and Stono Rivers, this suburb offers unlimited options for outdoor amenities.

Choosing a neighborhood can be a difficult decision no matter if you are buying or renting. The old saying “Location, Location, Location” still rings true in many real estate transactions. In an area like West Ashley there are many attractive neighborhoods to choose from when looking for a place to call home. Just over the Ravenel Bridge, you’ll find a popular luxury neighborhood comprised of traditional style homes with desirable brick exteriors on spacious lots with beautiful natural surroundings. Established in the 1920s, The Crescent neighborhood offers privacy with a relaxing atmosphere offered by quaint streets and a number of homes with waterfront access to the Intracoastal Waterway. You’ll find Porter Gaud private school and South Windermere Center all within close proximity.

Avondale is a favorite location in the Lowcountry known for its whimsical charm. This is an attractive area for young professionals, as well as those looking to live near popular attractions such as delicious restaurants and shops. Another great feature of the Avondale neighborhood is the West Ashley Greenway, a beautiful 7.8-mile walking trail that winds through surrounding neighborhoods, is just a hop, skip and a jump away.

Byrnes Downs is a quaint neighborhood located off Highway 17 and is one of the closest West Ashley neighborhoods to the Charleston Peninsula. Most homes in this area are cozy brick, cottage style homes that were built in the 1940s and 1950s. Located within close proximity, you’ll find Earth Fare grocery store, a Charleston County Library branch and popular restaurants and shops.

Ashley Harbor is a well-established community that offers the very best of waterfront living. This gated community is known for its luxurious home designs and features mostly large homes. If you enjoy spending time on the water, this neighborhood is a great option as it is situated just west of the Ashley River.

The Moreland neighborhood is situated in a prime location just over the Ashley River Bridge and known for its charming brick homes that stand among beautiful live oak trees. Moreland consists of ranch style homes that offer a timeless charm that can be hard to find with today’s modern homes. Located off highway 61, Moreland is about five minutes from downtown Charleston and fifteen minutes from Folly Beach.
