Charleston Home Nostalgia – Cell Phone Not Required

I recently had the pleasure of attending a concert in Charleston and listening to live music. The band I went to see was one that I enjoyed in my younger years. As they announced that they were celebrating the 31st anniversary of their popular third album, I had that amazing reminder of time marching on.  In looking around at the crowd as I enjoyed the music, it took me back to how influential music was to me and my life during that time.

One of the things I realized was that music was influential because I didn’t carry a computer in my pocket at that time.  I experienced a concert through my eyes and ears and did not have to look through a chorus of raised arms with phones, watching it being recorded on a small screen. It also brought me back to a time that I didn’t have up to the minute news stories, podcasts to hear thoughts and opinions, or YouTube to show me things where I must wonder about what is real and what is staged.  In the past, I was limited to the radio or a CD, and when I was very young, a cassette tape. And no…I am not old enough to have listened to an 8-track tape.

If you have read this far you are no doubt wondering how this relates to real estate or perhaps how I have this platform to write on a real estate blog.  My nostalgic thinking was that many will never have these experiences because of the cell phone/handheld computer.  I begin to realize that some of those experiences that we look back on fondly still occur when we are at home.  The home is still the place where you learn how to cook, where school projects are made, where birthdays are celebrated, where the events of the day are shared over dinner, where skinned knees are covered by band-aids, where friends gather….and the list goes on.  And as you could guess…the home is also a great place to put down your phone and put on some music. Don’t get me wrong, the cell phone can and does invade these spaces, but I think many of us are mindful of minimizing it during these special times at home.
