Becoming The Next Chapter – Buying A Historic Home

Charleston, South Carolina is one of the oldest cities in America.  Charleston was founded in 1663 and over the course of the following years it witnessed growth through trade, three major British attacks in the American Revolution, the first shots of the civil war, near total destruction from an Earthquake, and was named the #1 city in the US by Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure.  Of course many things occurred in between those events, but you get the idea that Charleston has seen a lot.

All of this history can be preserved in few places.  History can be preserved in books, pictures, and stories.  In addition to these, Charleston history is held in a very unique place, and that is in historic homes.  Charleston has been able to preserve historic homes extremely well. When we have a client ready to sell a historic home we know there is a story.  The owner will have a story about acquiring the home.  That history will include what the owner has done to preserve the property.  The narrative then progresses to their life experiences in the home.

At William Means we know how much that story means.  Often times we will seek the help of Historic Charleston Foundation to help us research and find information and back-stories on the historic homes we list.  The research examines historic plats, deeds of ownership, and preserved writings about Charleston properties dating back hundreds of years.  Our marketing team then gathers and designs materials so that the buyer can know what an amazing piece of history they now own.  The materials can be preserved to share the story with others.

It is amazing to think of things that stand the test of time.  The world evolves at such an amazing rate and Charleston historic homes stand through that time.  Just think, as the buyer of a historic home you become the next chapter of the story.  While historic homes have some inconveniences that an owner has to endure, being that next chapter is truly priceless.
