A Charleston Map – Are We There Yet?

Maps have always been fascinating to me.  It is amazing to take something that is vast like a land mass and then have it scaled down so that you can see it all so clearly in a consolidated space.  As Realtors, we often consult maps to view locations of neighborhoods, proximity to schools and the fastest routes to get to businesses.  While I usually look at a map with a focus in mind, I recently reviewed a map of Charleston and thought about the different areas and how they make the Lowcountry special.

The first unmistakable trait of looking at a map of Charleston is the abundance of waterways.  While we live on the beautiful Atlantic Ocean, the waterways that meander through Charleston provide an abundance of Lowcountry scenery and nature.  The dissection of land gives the area amazing islands including Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, Morris Island, Folly Beach, James and John Island, Wadmalaw Island, Kiawah Island, Seabrook Island and Edisto Island.  It is amazing that all of these islands have unique characteristics, traits and vibes – all while being located in the Charleston area.

A map of Charleston gives us an idea of why, when it was first established, the downtown peninsula became the place with the largest population since it is tucked away from the coast.  It also shows that downtown Charleston is not a large land mass and quite small in comparison to the Charleston area as a whole. In looking at the larger map of Charleston, you can zoom in to find even more areas and stories through historic maps of the peninsula and its burroughs. You can further explore outside of downtown through individual maps of North Charleston and Summerville or even historical sites like Middleton Place, Magnolia Plantation, Drayton Hall, Boone Hall and the Angel Oak.

When relocating to Charleston, explore our favorite Southern city through the guidance of a good map and a trusted relationship with a William Means real estate agent. You will surely find that Charleston offers something for everyone.
