5 Ways to Prepare Your Home for the Holidays

◂ Back to Posts

The holiday season is marked by festive parties, gift giving, and wonderful memories made with family and friends. Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or  expecting overnight guests, following these five tips will ensure your home is ready for holiday festivities.

Adjust Lighting. The sun sets much earlier during the winter months, so it’s important to make sure your home is well-lit to welcome guests. Check your outdoor lighting including your entryway, porch, and sidewalk lights to ensure your guests can easily approach your home. Inside, consider adding table lamps to brighten dimly-lit corners and light candles to create a cozy atmosphere.

Clean and Declutter. Before the holiday season is in full swing, consider having your home deep cleaned so you can rest at ease knowing it’s ready for guests. To make your foyer and living areas feel more open and spacious, remove clutter and put away objects that won’t be used during the winter months.

Prep Kitchen Appliances. Prepare your kitchen for holiday cooking and baking by tuning up all of your appliances. Now is the time to make sure all of your burners are working, clean out the refrigerator, dishwasher, and oven and even sharpen your knives. Also consider plugging in your crock pots, mixers, and other small appliances to ensure they are working properly.

Activities for Guests of All Ages. From board games and cards to small toys, determine what activities you can have on hand this holiday season to entertain guests of all ages. Bocce ball, corn hole and soccer are other fun activities that can be easily set up outdoors and played nearly year-round in Charleston.

Add Holiday Cheer. Have fun decorating your home for the holidays with festive touches both inside and out. A fresh wreath on the front door, a decked-out Christmas tree or an artfully-arranged fireplace mantle all bring warmth and cheer into your home.

Most importantly, we hope you enjoy this wonderful season and spending time with family, friends, and loved ones. Happy Holidays from all of us at William Means!
