Strolling the cobblestone streets of downtown, you’ll find architectural excellence around every corner. Charleston’s historic district is divided into “boroughs,” each with its own unique personality. Come with us as we tour five popular downtown areas.

The Cannonborough/Elliotborough neighborhood is best known for its laid back, residential streets and off the beaten path eateries.  Grab a bite to eat at Five Loaves or check out Sugar Bakeshop on Cannon for your sweet tooth fix.

Harleston Village is home to beautiful downtown landmarks including the city’s grandest hotel, the Wentworth Mansion. You’ll love talking a stroll around Colonial Lake and taking in the beauty of the College of Charleston campus.

If you’re exploring the City Market, Ansonborough is just steps away featuring regal homes removed from the hustle and bustle of downtown living. In close proximity to King Street, the area offers wonderful restaurants including popular FIG.

The French Quarter was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and features many fine historical buildings including the Dock Street Theatre, the Old Slave Mart and the “Pink House” on Chalmers Street. Enjoy stunning views of the harbor and the Ravenel Bridge at popular Waterfront Park.

South of Broad is a welcoming neighborhood located on the tip of the Charleston peninsula. Its streets are lined with some of the finest examples of historic architecture, from Charleston single houses to stately Georgian homes. Visitors travel miles to see its renowned beauty and historic details — but for people who live here, the magic is just outside their front door!
