◂ Back to Posts

School will be back in session in just a few short weeks, and it feels like summer always goes by too quickly! Make the last few weeks of summer break count and work through our list of ten things to do in Charleston before school begins.

Fish at Shem Creek. At the heart of Old Mount Pleasant, Shem Creek offers a relaxed environment for fishing, kayaking, or paddle boarding. Keep your eyes open for pods of dolphins and the many waterfowl that frequent this tidal waterway.

Browse the Charleston Farmer’s Market. Located in Marion Square of downtown Charleston on Saturdays from 8am – 2pm, the Charleston Farmer’s Market is the Lowcountry’s largest with more than 100 vendors. Browse through aisles of fresh produce from local farms, handcrafted jewelry and home goods while enjoying concessions from food vendors.

Visit the South Carolina Aquarium. One of ten libraries and museums in the country to receive this year’s National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the South Carolina Aquarium is located in the heart of downtown at the East end of Calhoun Street. With special events every week, there’s something for everyone at this downtown attraction.

Lounge at the Beach. The Lowcountry boasts beautiful beaches that offer a wonderful reprieve from the summer heat. From the pristine waterfront at Isle of Palms beach to the laid-back surfer culture at Folly Beach, there are many activities to enjoy from sunbathing to swimming to beach volleyball. Learn more about area beaches here.

Kayak the Lowcountry Waterways. Serene waterways and marshes wind all throughout the Charleston area. Experience natural scenery and wildlife by exploring these waterways by kayak or paddle board.

Attend a RiverDogs Baseball Game. Charleston’s own minor league baseball team, the Charleston RiverDogs, play in the Class Single-A South Atlantic League and are an affiliate of the New York Yankees. Experience the fun baseball game atmosphere at their home stadium, Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston’s West Side neighborhood.

Shop at the Charleston Market. Dozens of local artists, artisans and chefs offer a wonderful variety of specialty goods for purchase at the historic downtown market. There are always new items to browse through and special market events and live music on the weekends.

Play at the Splash Zone Waterpark. A favorite at James Island County Park, Splash Zone offers slides, play structures, a lazy river, leisure pool, lounge areas, and concessions, the perfect recipe for a day of summer fun. The park is open daily through August 17th.

Enjoy the View from the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. For panoramic views of downtown Charleston, Mount Pleasant, and the Charleston Harbor and Atlantic Ocean beyond, there is no better vantage point than the top of the beloved Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. Enter the Wonders Way pedestrian/bicycle path from either Mount Pleasant or downtown and enjoy the view.

Wade in the Pineapple Fountain. The crown jewel of downtown’s charming French Quarter, Joe Riley Waterfront Park is home to the iconic Pineapple Fountain. Dip your toes in the refreshing water while taking in beautiful Charleston Harbor views.

However you enjoy your last few weeks before the end of summer vacation, we hope you stay safe and have fun!
