William Means Guide to The Old Village

The Old Village District in Mount Pleasant is set apart from any other neighborhood in the Lowcountry. Its quaint streets are filled with captivating charm, historic homes, grand live oak trees, spectacular views and mom ‘n’ pop shops. Famous Outdoor Attractions. Along your journey throughout the Old Village, you’ll stumble upon a couple slices of heaven that entail nothing less than dreamy, picturesque views. Pitt Street Bridge, built in 1898, offers a greenway for walking and biking and is the perfect place to have a picnic, read a book, walk your dog or go fishing. Take in the best views of the Charleston Harbor and surrounding marshland while watching the sunrise or sunset. Alhambra Hall, a former Ferry Terminal, overlooks the Charleston Harbor and is a popular venue for weddings and outdoor activities and includes walking paths to the marsh and a playground across the street. Both of these places are convenient peaceful escapes offering plenty of charm and fresh ocean air.

Unique Shopping and Dining. Make your way to Old Village’s small shopping district where you’ll find small mom ‘n’ pop shops that consist of an antiques store, a unique apparel shop, an Italian wine shop, a gym and a soda fountain pharmacy called Pitt Street Pharmacy. Pitt Street Pharmacy opened in 1937 and offers more than just prescriptions. The Soda Fountain diner is a great place to take a break and have lunch or enjoy an ice cream cone. This diner was featured in popular films such as “The Notebook”, “Outer Banks”, “Drive-In’s & Soda Shops” among other popular films and shows. “Pitt Street Pharmacy is what makes the Old Village of Mount Pleasant feel like Mayberry; a refreshing step back in time!” -W. Classic Southern Homes. The roots of the Old Village of Mount Pleasant stretch back to the 18th century, making it one of the area’s oldest waterfront communities. It was originally the location of summer homes for wealthy Charlestonians, but is now comprised of many different types of homes and families. This historic neighborhood is filled with stunning Southern architecture, though many homes have been tastefully updated with modern features. You’ll also find plenty of gorgeous Coastal-style new-builds located along the streets. Most of the homes consist of wide front porches, large windows and spacious yards lined perfectly with grand oak trees.
