William Means Guide to Byrnes Downs

◂ Back to Posts

Set in West Ashley off of Savannah Highway and only two miles from downtown Charleston, the Byrnes Downs neighborhood is popular for its central location, charming cottage-style homes and friendly community. Come explore Byrnes Downs with us.

Rich History. Originally designed as rental properties for Charleston Naval Shipyard workers, Byrnes Downs homes were later sold to veterans after the end of World War II. In 1948, the Byrnes Downs Garden Club was formed which landscaped neighborhood gateways and planted 107 live oaks in the late 1940’s-50’s. Continued civic engagement and the thoughtful renovations of homes over the years has only improved this wonderful neighborhood.

Charming Homes. Canopied by elegant live oaks, picturesque cottage-style homes line quiet streets. Many have been expanded from the original two- or three-bedroom floor plan to create space for modern lifestyles complete with screened porches, patios and fenced yards for outdoor living space.

Shopping & Dining Options. Byrnes Downs residents are just a few minutes’ walk from local establishments like Gene’s Haufbrau, Triangle Char & Bar, Avondale Wine & Cheese and Charleston Fermentory. Also close by are Harris Teeter, Orange Theory Fitness and other convenient amenities.

West Ashley Greenway. Intersecting the neighborhood, the West Ashley Greenway is a 8.8 mile long paved pathway running parallel to Highway 17. Enjoy walking, jogging, and bicycling year-round on this scenic greenway.
