William Means Guide to James Island

◂ Back to Posts

The Town of James Island was founded in 1992, and after years of legal battles struggling to exist, the Town succeeded in 2012 with its fourth and final incorporation. History and culture, small town living and laid-back beach vibes converge in James Island, making it a truly unique community with the best the Lowcountry has to offer.

The Beach. The historic Town of James of Island is near laid-back Folly Beach, an oceanfront favorite for visitors and locals alike.

Character. History and culture blend with the best of Southern hospitality, making this Lowcountry town an ideal spot to live.

Beautiful Views. Breathtaking water views and majestic oak trees frame this former farming community turned residential area. Despite the town’s growth, it maintains that small town, rural character.

Dining. James Island has a number of excellent local restaurants and cafés for an authentic Lowcountry meal. Dine with a beach view at one of Folly Beach’s laid-back restaurants – Taco Boy, Loggerhead’s Beach Grill and Lost Dog Café.

Shopping. Shop centers along Harbor View Road for national retailers and local boutiques provide plenty of shopping experiences. Or head to Folly Beach for beach supplies.

Sightseeing. James Island County Park is 643 acres of natural beauty, recreation facilities and a dog park. In addition to a summertime water park, it also hosts special concerts and events all year. Visit Folly Beach to collect seashells and photograph the Morris Island Lighthouse.

Housing. James Island offers buyers a variety of option, including waterfront homes, family communities, new construction and tree-filled established neighborhoods. The best part all of them are close to both the beach and downtown Charleston.
