William Means’ Favorite Southern Home Trends

◂ Back to Posts

It’s all in the details. Detail work, accents and other small changes that tend to fly under the radar are often the pieces that truly bring a home together. Southerners just love their details and we can’t help but admire them! We’ve rounded up a list of our favorite southern home trends, whether you’re looking for some inspiration or just want to appreciate a little taste of the south.

Butler’s Pantry. At the top of our list is the butler’s pantry, one of the most underrated rooms in a home. The butler’s pantry is typically located just off the kitchen or dining room and provides ample space for storage and prepping/serving meals. The history of a butler’s pantry dates back to when families needed a room large enough to safely store their silver, china and large serving platters and utensils. A butler’s pantry can be upgraded or designed to fit your family’s specific needs, however the most common upgrades and additions are usually a dishwasher, small refrigerator and sink.

Gas lanterns. A classic Charleston home staple. At one point in time, gas lanterns were the only way to light the streets from dusk to dawn. With Charleston being one of the oldest cities in America, Charlestonians take great pride in honoring their culture and history, and adorning your home with gas lanterns is a simple, yet effective way to keep the exterior of your home lit, while preserving small details of history.

Wrap-Around Porch. Quite possibly one of our favorite features of a southern home is the wrap-around porch. Before central air conditioning existed, large wrap-around porches were designed to protect a home’s interior from the brutal sun, while also providing a large entertaining space for friends and family to gather and beat the heat. From rocking chairs and throw pillows to wicker furniture and string lights, southern porches are home to some of the best memories.

Pillars and columns. Southern homes take inspiration from Greek Revival architecture with the use of grand pillars and columns. These columns were often used to hold up second-story porches and galleries. Take a stroll through downtown Charleston and you’re sure to find these details everywhere.

Southern homes truly are one of a kind. If you’re looking to buy your dream home in Charleston, one of our agents would be happy to assist you.
