From gorgeous sunset views to dolphin sightings, Charleston is known for its picturesque backdrop. The historic cobblestone streets, the whimsical houses on Rainbow Row and the fresh salt air by the Battery are just a few of the most iconic Charleston spots that everyone knows and loves. Unbeknownst to some, these famous spots have actually been the backdrop for quite a few movies and TV shows. We’ve rounded up a list of famous TV shows and movies filmed right here in the Holy City!
The Notebook. This romantic drama filmed in the historic district, by the Battery and at Cypress Gardens, just outside of Charleston. The house that Noah restored for Allie can be found on Martins Point Plantation on Wadmalaw Island.
The Patriot. This period piece filmed in the historic district and at Middleton Place, in West Ashley. Like The Notebook, parts of the movie were also filmed at the College of Charleston.
Dear John. This romantic drama filmed scenes on the campus of College of Charleston, right in the heart of the city, as well as the beaches of Edisto Island and Sullivan’s Island.
Outer Banks. Though set in North Carolina, the popular Netflix series filmed in quite a few locations throughout downtown Charleston, Mount Pleasant and Kiawah Island. Viewers will recognize water scenes from Shem Creek, as well as the famous house of Lowndes Grove.
