Tips For Styling Your Fireplace

◂ Back to Posts

After a long, hot Charleston summer, we are ready to savor the cooler temperatures and fun fall festivities. Besides getting to pull out sweaters and savory autumn recipes, we always look forward to cozy evenings by the fireside. Fireplaces serve as excellent centerpieces of a space and are just as fun to decorate and style as a sideboard, coffee table or dining table. Follow these tips for a perfectly styled fireplace to enjoy through the colder months.

Choose a focal piece. If you have a favorite painting, framed photo or sculpture, use this as the inspiration for your mantel decor. Then gather smaller items to create a cohesive look. Whatever your focal point is, make sure it’s big enough to anchor the space.

Layer textures and colors. In addition to including different sized pieces in your fireplace decor, utilizing different colors and textures adds visual interest. For instance, you could pair a large painting with a wood or metal sculpture, or add a textile piece to enhance an arrangement.

Create visual movement. Strategically layering objects and selecting pieces of varying heights will create “visual movement” in your fireplace decor, so that the eye naturally moves over the space.

Non-flammable decor. If you have a non-working fireplace or just prefer not to light yours, try filling the center with logs, an urn, books, or another aesthetically pleasing space-filler for a contemporary look.

Change things up each season. For a refreshed look as the seasons change, small updates can go a long way. Incorporate a few gourds into your fireplace decor for fall, pine boughs or ornaments for the winter holidays, and fresh flowers in the spring and summer.

Time to get creative with your fireplace styling and make the most of these wonderful cooler temperatures. Happy Fall!
