How to Spend Memorial Day in Charleston

◂ Back to Posts

As Memorial Day approaches, we remember and honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedom. Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day originated a few years after the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day weekend also unofficially marks the beginning of the summer season. We’ve rounded up our favorite ways to spend this long weekend in Charleston.

Memorial Day Concert at Hampton Park. Join the combined Charleston Concert Band and Columbia Community Band on Monday, May 29th at 3pm at Hampton Park. This annual concert honors those who fought for our country. Bring a chair to relax and enjoy the music. Learn more, here.

Piccolo Spoleto Memorial Day Concert. Marion Square is transformed into a beautiful open-air fine art market as South Carolina artists exhibit and sell their work. The 45th annual Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibition presents the work of 60 fine artists in a free open-air venue the entire family can enjoy. This event will be held May 26th-June 11th. Memorial Day Picnic. I’On hosts an annual Memorial Day Picnic at the neighborhood amphitheater. Bring a side dish to share and to accompany the fried chicken that will be provided. If you’re an I’On resident, this is the perfect way to meet your neighbors and catch up with friends. Stop by the William Means tent and you might just see a few of your favorite neighborhood agents. Memorial Day Weekend at The Watch. Enjoy an all-American celebration featuring live performances from local artists on Saturday and Sunday at The Watch. There will also be a festive Happy Hour menu featuring a Southern Slider Trio from 4pm-7pm Friday through Monday. Read more.

Spend the day on the water. Charleston has endless options when it comes to spending the day on the water. Head to Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms or Folly Beach with your beach chair, blanket, umbrella and cooler full of snacks. Memorial Day is one of the busiest beach days of the year, so make sure to arrive early enough to find a parking space. Memorial Day weekend is also a popular time to take out the boat and enjoy cruising around the Lowcountry.

Grill out. Memorial Day is also one of the most popular days to fire up the grill for the first cook out of the year. Grilling out is a great way to bring friends and family together and kick off the summer season. A full day on the water followed by a cook out is the best way to spend a day off in Charleston.

Thank you to all the brave men and women who protect our freedom. We hope you enjoy your Memorial Day weekend!
