Charleston Luxury Properties: Legare Street

◂ Back to Posts

Legare Street is one of the finest streets on the Charleston peninsula, lined with expansive lots and impressive gardens established by some of the city’s most affluent residents.  The street was named after Soloman Legare, a prosperous French Huguenot silversmith who owned considerable real estate at the corner of Tradd and Legare Streets.  Many of the homes along this quiet South of Broad street retain their original outbuildings, which formerly served as kitchens, laundries and carriage houses.

35 Legare St – UNDER CONTRACT

The Elizabeth Williams House located at 35 Legare Street is listed by William Means Broker-In-Charge, Helen Geer, and is now under contract.  This historic single house is located on a prime section of Legare Street, south of Tradd Street.   The property consists of a three story wood frame main house and a two story brick dependency, which has a slate roof.  The historic Loutrel Briggs garden on the property dates back to 1961.  The Historic Charleston Foundation purchased this property through its Frances Edmunds Revolving Fund and is now selling it with strict historic rehabilitation standards with interior, exterior and garden easements. When you choose to purchase a historic Charleston home, a fascinating story usually can be uncovered.  Through the Historic Charleston Foundation’s research on 35 Legare Street they discovered that six women have owned and operated the property for 167 of its 320 years.  While it was not rare for women to own land in Charleston’s early history, it was also not typical.  There are three women whose ownerships of the property are of particular note: Elizabeth Damaris Moultrie, Elizabeth Williams and Rebecca Screven.  Ready to learn more?
