Do some neighborhoods restrict design/appearance of properties?

◂ Back to Posts

“Many of the nicer neighborhoods in the Charleston area (I’On, Olde Park, Braemore, Country Club of Charleston, The Crescent, to name a few) have restrictions that vary from lot size to complete architectural approval of every house built in the community.  While at times it might seem restrictive to new buyers, it protects the integrity of the neighborhood, creates symmetry in the architecture, and protects property values.  If the house next to you is run down, needs maintenance, has an unkempt appearance, buyers will ask themselves if they want to live next door to an eyesore and the answer is most often no.  Having a strong home owners association and restrictive covenants prevents this kind of situation from happening.”
