Aging Boomers Changing the Face of Retirement

◂ Back to Posts

According to Realtor.com, two South Carolina cities have entered into the “15 Best Retirement Cities“: Greenville and Charleston.  Today boomers are willing to move further and are breaking the mold of their parents retirement plans and destinations.  The 2010 Del Webb Baby Boomer Survey indicates that 42% of today’s 50 year olds are planning to move for retirement and they are looking to downsize in new urban states like South Carolina and North Carolina.  As you can see, the Carolina’s are becoming the new Florida.

Today’s retirees are looking for pedestrian friendly, urban living.  Attractions within the community, proximity to shopping, walking/jogging trails, public transportation, doctors/hospitals, and churches are increasing in importance while proximity to golf has fallen of the list.

Baby Boomers are also interested in new developments and are looking for big bathrooms, 1st floor master suites, storage space, wide doors, and extra lighting.  And don’t forget that today’s seniors are tech savvy and want high speed internet connections, security systems, lighting control, and energy management systems.
