A Home For The Holidays

◂ Back to Posts

In the hunt for the perfect house this holiday season, it’s easy to get caught up in the magic of warm fireplaces and perfect gourmet kitchens for entertaining. Keep these tips in mind when searching for your Charleston dream home before the New Year!

Set Your Priorities. Do you really need those heated floors in your master bathroom or do you just want them? In this case, the likely answer is BOTH but it’s important to keep in mind a list of what you absolutely must have in your new home. Think of the number of bedrooms, outdoor space, gourmet kitchen etc. Try to keep your must-haves on a separate list, to remind yourself and your agent of what you cannot live without.

Location, Location, Location. Oftentimes when buying a new home you are paying for the location, especially when it comes to Charleston real estate. From South of Broad to the Isle of Palms, where your new home is situated will influence your commute to work, where your children will go to school as well as your proximity to the area beaches (a big plus during the summer months).

Compare & Contrast. After multiple showings at many different homes, it will be hard to keep track of special features and your favorite rooms. Keep property brochures and feature sheets provided by the agent and create your own comparison chart to document what you loved (and didn’t love) about each home. Ex. Pool, gardens, waterfront location etc.

Day & Night. Check out your potential new property at different times of day. Is the backyard super shady in the afternoon or does traffic increase around rush hour? Taking notice of these key details can make or break whether you move forward with the purchase of a home.

Measure Up! If you have a favorite piece of furniture that you absolutely cannot part with, you will want to be sure that is has a place in your new home. Bring a measuring tape and a list of furniture measurements with you as you view properties. This will help you imagine your own pieces in your new space.
