5 Things To Do When You Move To A New Neighborhood

◂ Back to Posts

Moving into a new home can be one of the most exciting (and slightly stressful) times in your life. From an initial offer, the signed contract, inspection and closing day – there are plenty of hoops to jump through when buying a home. Now that moving day is finally here, follow these tips and tricks to feel right at home in your new neighborhood!

Get organized. Between changing addresses, switching over utilities and creating new accounts there is plenty to think about when moving into your new home. Stay organized by creating a paper or digital file with documents for your house and set calendar reminders for any upcoming appointments for cable, internet or home security installation. Also keep in mind neighborhood trash and recycle pickup dates as you will most certainly have boxes and packing materials to dispose.

Connect online. A great way to get familiar with your neighborhood is connecting online through an area Facebook group or NextDoor. While some communities have HOAs, others have neighborhood groups that you may join once you make your move official. This is a great way to stay up to date with general notices, events and to ask for recommendations for local vendors and service providers.

Meet your neighbors. Getting acquainted with your neighbors doesn’t have to be daunting, they are most likely looking forward to getting to know you! The easiest way to do so is by stopping by the homes that are immediately next to you and simply introducing yourself or dropping off a homemade treat. Hosting a small housewarming party or open house is also a great way to connect with those that live on other streets. Any kind gesture will go a long way!

Explore the community. Whether you’ve moved across the country or across town, now is the time to get familiar with your surroundings. Our advice would be to visit different shops, restaurants and nearby parks to really get the lay of the land. While downtown Charleston has many distinct boroughs, each individual area in Charleston has its own unique vibe. For instance, you might live in West Ashley but love the shopping in Mount Pleasant or reside on James Island but spend time out at Sullivan’s Island in the summer. The beauty of living in Charleston is that there is truly a community for everyone.

Enjoy your new home. Our final piece of advice? It might seem silly but don’t forget to enjoy your new home. This is something you have worked hard for and what better place to call home than the Lowcountry? From fun house projects like interior decorating to enjoying the weather on your screened-in porch, we know that you’ll feel right at home in Charleston.
