If you are looking at homes for sale in I’On you should not miss 213 North Shelmore Boulevard.  This beautiful Charleston single home was recently listed by Michelle McQuillan. Every home tells a story; below is the story of the current owners and what they loved about their coveted home.

When it was time to buy a new house for their growing family, Chappy and Sarah McKay knew one thing for sure: They were not leaving I’On. As one of the earliest families to settle here — they have the distinction of being the first family in I’On to welcome a new baby into their home — they understood what this unique development offered with its play parks, walking trails and safe, friendly environment so close to downtown.

For their new home, they wanted a dedicated playroom for their children and an open floor plan that allowed for easy entertaining. “We loved this house” right away, says Sarah of her home at 213 N. Shelmore. “The antique-inspired wood floors were what I first noticed. And when the French doors are opened up to the porch, it provides wonderful breezes and a nice circular flow.”

The kitchen is well-designed and open to the family room, allowing them to interact with their guests while still preparing dinner. “We like to have friends over for football parties,” says Sarah. “And it can get a little rambunctious with excitement when Alabama gets that ball. So a big, open space is key for a crowd like that.” She also likes that she can enjoy the woodburning fireplace in the family room even when she’s in the kitchen preparing dinner after a long day of work. “It just works really well for us,” she says of the floorplan. “We’ve been able to raise our family in a house that provided us all the space we needed,” she says of the home they have now lived in for more than seven years.

That first I’On baby, Ellis, is now a strapping 15-year-old boy away at boarding school. So Maggie, their 11-year-old daughter, gets full reign over the third floor media/playroom, where she likes to have sleepovers with her friends and sew or do art projects. “I like having my own space!” she says.

For Chappy, a large, two-car garage was essential for housing all of his tools as well as the family’s stash of bikes and sporting equipment. He also appreciates that he can offer visitors lots of privacy in the guest house, which has a full bath and kitchenette, above the detached garage.

The large fenced-in yard also provides plenty of room for the McKays’ two adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Bama and Sunny. “They love to greet the neighbors and other dogs walking by or just sun themselves on the front and back porches,” says Sarah.
