Trey Mathisen

Trey Mathisen was born and raised in Charleston and has a deep appreciation for his community and enjoys everything the Lowcountry offers. He is a graduate of Bishop England High School and earned a degree in Business Administration at The Citadel. Trey began his 30-year career as a licensed and certified real estate appraiser and agent. In 2004, he partnered to form the appraisal firm, Charleston Area Appraisals, specializing in residential properties along the South Carolina coast. From McClellanville to Edisto, his firm focused on historic homes, multi-unit properties, waterfront estates, resort communities and rural acreage.

Trey is one of the area's authorities by developers, builders, attorneys, agents and appraisers. His opinions are frequently sought as a consultant or expert witness, especially when it comes to complex properties and transactions. Trey has also acquired a vast knowledge of the construction and renovation process by working with contractors and investors. He understands the complexities involved with historic homes, major renovation and construction projects. Over the years, Trey has developed trusted relationships with local custom builders, full-service contractors, lenders and architects. His network of relationships create a seamless process when helping his clients buy and sell their Charleston homes.

Trey and his wife, Amy, have two children and have lived in I'On for more than twenty-five years. He was elected by his neighbors to serve on the I'On Homeowners' Association, last serving as vice-president of the board. He has also volunteered through the I'On Trust for neighborhood events and was awarded the Civitas Award in 2024 for his dedicated community service.

Trey has served as past president and board member of The Citadel Club of Charleston and volunteered with the Mount Pleasant Track Club. He is an active member of Grace Episcopal Church, serving in many volunteer capacities over the years. He is also a member of the Charleston Trident Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors.

Testimonials

  • Trey stands out as the consummate real estate professional when it comes to the Lowcountry. He has represented us on two transactions in the past; both of which involved difficult issues and required extra effort and diligence on his part. Throughout the process, Trey kept us extremely informed of the situation and any real or potential issues along with his sound recommendations for action. Once Trey was representing us, all we had to do was observe the progress. His persistence and attention to detail assures a successful real estate transaction.

  • We have bought and sold numerous properties together over our lifetime, but Trey made the process as seamless as it could have possibly been for us in finding and purchasing a second home in I'On to be close to our children and their families. During the process, we were living in our primary residence in St Simons, Georgia, but that did not slow Trey down in the slightest or cause any issues for us or him. Simply put, Trey made positive things happen for us from the smallest of details to major tasks, moving forward the transaction. He handles everything for his clients which in turn helps create a stress-free scenario for everyone involved. Trey's extensive knowledge of the area and strong interpersonal skills coupled with his effective communication set him apart as an agent and made our lives much easier during the entire transaction.
    - Joanne and Ed Kotz

  • We would recommend working with Trey to sell or buy a home. His background as an appraiser with a knowledge of local trends and values was incredibly helpful. Trey helped us get the home prepared for sale, and he provided us with resources and advice to make the sale move and quickly and smoothly as possible.

What do you think sets you apart as a real estate agent?

I offer more than thirty years of valuable market knowledge and experience in Charleston real estate. During my lengthy career, I have developed an extensive network of resources and relationships to help my clients successfully buy and sell properties. My aim is to always go above and beyond for my clients to ensure their needs are met in every transaction and that any potential problems are solved quickly and efficiently. Most importantly, I understand the importance of trust in relationships and work hard to build and maintain that trust with each person I interact with during my day. Over the years, I have gained trust by treating everyone with integrity, communicating with transparency and demonstrating honesty in all situations.

What is your ideal boating day in Charleston?

My ideal day on the water starts off by leaving Hobcaw Creek early in the morning for a surf fishing trip to a remote beach until early afternoon. Later, we will boat with friends to Daniel Island for dinner at a waterfront restaurant or to a local sandbar for a cook-out. Topping it off with a beautiful sunset, you have the perfect day on the water.

What is your favorite restaurant in Charleston?

Currently, my favorite restaurant in Charleston is Vern's, located in a charming, restored corner store in Elliotborough. Years ago, I recall being inside the property before its renovation by a local craftsman client, and the transformation was amazing. The food at Vern's offers fresh, seasonal ingredients with exceptional service. The Elliotborough Mini Bar, one block away, is always a fun spot before or after dinner to catch eclectic live music.
