Historic Sale ~ William Means Exclusive Affiliate of Christie’s Great Estates Represents Buyer of the Most Expensive Residential Home Ever Sold in the City of Charleston May 15, 2009 – Charleston, SC - Charleston luxury real estate firm William Means Real Estate recently represented the buyer of 37 Meeting Street on Charleston’s downtown peninsula. Listed at $7,750,000 and sold for $7,375,000, the sale represents the highest closing price in the history of residential home sales in the city of Charleston. The contract for sale was entered into in April. “Despite the dismal economic news we’ve been hearing, this historic sale is at least some proof that the real estate market in Charleston is recovering,” says Helen Lyles Geer, William Means Broker-in-Charge and the agent representing the buyer. “We have closed over $36 million so far this year in all areas of the Lowcountry, and have over $5.7 million under contract and scheduled to close within the next 6 weeks. We’ve had impressive sales downtown, on Sullivan’s and Seabrook Islands, and East of the Cooper. Our new relationship with I’On has dramatically increased our sales in the neighborhood. We are continuing to work with more and more buyers and sellers.” Geer continues, “While there is no doubt that the economy as a whole has slowed down, we are seeing consumer confidence greatly return. If done wisely, investing in bricks and mortar has historically proven to be one of your greatest assets.” Built in 1760, 37 Meeting Street — also known as the James Simmons House — was home to the builder of the same name and later S.C. Governor Robert Gibbes and financier Otis Mills, the original owner of the Mills House. Confederate General Pierre G. T. Beauregard used the home as the headquarters for Charleston’s defense against the Union army. While the home was built in the Georgian style, the architecture has evolved over the years with the most recent owners completing major renovations and updates.
