More info for 21 Whooping Crane Lane

One of the few surviving antebellum plantation houses on St Helena Island, Tombee Plantation sits on roughly 20 acres along Station Creek with a dock, boatlift and spectacular views. Built in 1795 by Thomas Chaplin, the two-story, three bedroom, two and a half bath Georgian plantation home features the traditional Lowcountry T-shaped floor plan, a raised tabby foundation, and double-tired piazzas overlooking live oaks, a formal garden and marsh expanse. It was restored in 1971 by antique collector Jim Williams of Savannah, Georgia who was the star character in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The current owners recently hired Beckman Webb, an accomplished historic renovator, to restore the main house to the original floor plan, rewire the interior of the house, add two new heating and air units as well as a new copper roof. The main house kitchen was updated to include sub-zero refrigerator, stainless steel appliances and handmade cabinetry and the bathrooms were redone to include Italian tiled showers and marble sinks. In addition, the two bedroom, three bath guest cottage was restored and expanded making sure to use the appropriate materials of the 1800's to compliment the original structures. Most notably, the cottage features heart pine flooring, pecky cypress wainscoting and tongue and groove walls. Tombee Plantation offers peace and quiet in a truly majestic setting just a short trip from downtown Beaufort. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
